Joanne is a fully qualified teacher with 22 years classroom and 35 years private teaching experience. A seasoned performer and accompanist, she enjoys supporting students through their journey to becoming confident, competent musicians.
Qualifications: BA Honours degree in music from Leeds University, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, ABRSM Grade 8 Piano, Grade 8 Cello and Grade 8 theory.
Joanne teaches from home, a village between Barnsley and Wakefield.
It is important to Joanne that lessons are planned to meet the needs of students and that students have an input into the direction of their learning. Once at a certain standard, students can have some input as to what styles or pieces they learn. Joanne believes that, if students like the music they are learning, they practise more and so make better progress.
Joanne has had students who have gone on to become music teachers, classroom teachers, work for Opera North, work in the music industry, become orchestral performers, progress into higher musical education or simply enjoy music as a hobby for life.
During a free 30 minute initial assessment Joanne will administer some simple pitch, rhythm and listening tests to assess musical aptitude and ability. This gives you opportunity to meet with her, ask any questions and get a feel for it before you commit. If you then decide to go ahead with lessons Joanne will plan sequences of lessons specifically to meet your needs.

Whilst on site the nominated adult will be responsible for the safety of their possessions, any student under 18 years of age and themselves. Please let Joanne know of any medical or Special Educational Needs a student may have as this could help her to improve progress if it is relevant to music lessons. The nominated adult is responsible for the online safety and security of any student during an online lesson. The nominated adult is responsible for providing, maintaining and insurance for all and any equipment used to receive online tuition. The nominated adult agrees to ensure that children under the age of 18 are monitored whilst online lessons are in progress and younger children should be more closely guided in their use of equipment. Joanne Armitage is not responsible for any virus, online scam or malicious cyber attack which may result from online activity. The nominated adult will be responsible for managing equipment to assist in creating the best possible lesson experience with the available equipment.
Covid 19 Management and Guidance.
If any member of your family is showing symptoms of Covid 19 do not attend your lesson. Please ensure that students and any accompanying adults wash hands thoroughly before attending a lesson. Please keep the number of people entering the building to a minimum. If a sibling who is not being taught has to accompany your party, it would be preferable if they wait in a vehicle outside where possible. Masks are not compulsory but hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes will be available where needed. There must only be one family group in the building at any time. If you would ring the bell/knock then wait in your vehicle Joanne will let you know when the previous party has left and the equipment has been cleaned. Whilst in the building please try to encourage particularly younger students, to touch as little as possible. It would be helpful if the bathroom was only used in the case of absolute emergencies. If responsible adults could remind younger students before they set off to their lesson, that would helpful.
